A question I am often asked is if palo santo wood is mentioned in the Holy Bible.
Many Christians who enjoy burning frankincense and myrrh resin (which were the resins given to baby Jesus by the Three Wise Men in the Holy Bible) also often ask me if it is alright for them to burn palo santo wood, or if it is considered heresy of some sort.
Although I am Buddhist, I have read the Bible more then a couple times and I don’t remember a single time where palo santo wood was mentioned.
From the information I have gathered online, it seems that the reason some Christians don’t condone the use of palo santo is due to it’s historical use in South American spiritual rituals. Although, it’s worth noting that it was also used for social gatherings due to it’s bright aroma, as well as more practical purposes such as repelling mosquitoes and other insects.
The other side of the argument seems to say that since incense is a common theme in the Holy Bible, as long as you are simply using palo santo for it’s pleasant aroma, then it should be no different then any other incense.
My advice is, if you are a strict Christian, then perhaps you should talk with your local pastor or church and see what they think about it. This way you can be sure that you are doing the right thing in accordance with your local religious chapter.
