Today I am going to be reviewing Shoyeido Five Hills incense sticks.
Table of Contents
The product description says:
Five legendary mountains enclosing the city of Kyoto provide inspiration for this mellow, deep blending of cloves with the finest sandalwood from Mysore, India.
So, it’s clear from the description that this is intended to be a scent comprised primarily of clove and sandalwood.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the whole story.
Here is the ingredient list for Shoyeido Five Hills incense sticks.
Sandalwood, Patchouli, Clove, And Spices
Five Hills Fragrance Review
I lit this incense stick about 25 minutes ago. It still has a bit left to burn but I feel like I’ve smelled it for long enough to get an accurate feeling for this incense.
Shoyeido did a pretty decent job at blending this incense. The ingredient list makes the fragrance profile seem simple in theory, but it seems to have some complexities as well.
The clove and sandalwood scents are upfront, yet the patchouli makes the scent feel playful. The sandalwood is obviously the base note. I’m not exactly sure what other spices are included here, as they seem to be there simply to add the aforementioned complexity. I possibly smell some benzoin and nutmeg, but as the full ingredient list isn’t stated, I can only guess. I’m sure there’s something else in it as well.
One thing I love about natural plant-based incense is that the smells seem to constantly change while it burns.
There is a certain ‘ebb and flow’ characteristic to it.
Conclusion
The quality is there, yet, I feel there are other scents from Shoyeido which I like more.
However, I did find the scent to be calming and I could see a lot of people liking this quite a lot.
I hope you found this information beneficial.
